Tinnitus Management
Tinnitus can be referred to as “ringing in the ears”. However, it can take on various forms and is unique to each individual. It is important to understand that to understand tinnitus you have to understand how the brain creates tinnitus. There are a few approaches that are used to help reduce the severity of the tinnitus and it is specific to each person.
Hyperacusis
Hyperacusis can be described as a negative reaction to a sound which depends only on its physical characteristics (i.e., spectr
um, intensity).
Misophonia
Misophonia (Annoyance) can be described as a negative reaction to a sound with a specific pattern and meaning; physical characteristics are secondary. A person with misophonia may respond strongly to a soft sound with a specific pattern (e.g., a voice, the sounds of eating), but not react to other, even much louder sounds (e.g., loud music).
Decreased Sound Tolerance
Decreased Sound Tolerance may be present when an individual exhibits negative reactions following exposure to sound that would not evoke the same response in an average listener.
